Skating in Auckland: ice rinks, roller discos, snow and free skateparks

Auckland's skating category covers four quite different outings. For ice, the two Paradice rinks at Botany and Avondale run real ice with whale chairs and beginner skate frames plus birthday packages, and Botany bundles laser tag and mini golf into the same venue. Snowplanet in Silverdale goes a step further with real indoor snow and skiing, and is the most-reviewed venue in the category (4.4 from more than 2,700 reviews).

For roller skating, Skateland in Mount Wellington is the classic indoor rink with music nights, games and party rooms (4.6 stars), and SonSk8 in Glen Innes runs an indoor skatepark operated by East Skate Club that riders rate 4.8.

Then there are the free outdoor skateparks: Marlborough Skatepark in Glenfield stands out with ramps, rails, a bowl and a toddler play area beside it, and Victoria Park Skate Plaza and Birkenhead are solid central and North Shore options for scooters and boards.

Rinks hire skates and beginner frames on the door, while skateparks are free but bring-your-own gear, and a helmet is a must. Check rink session times before you go; public sessions share the ice with lessons.
